P7 Visit The Ulster American Folk Park

22 April 2026 (by Philip O'Neill (admin))

Having studied the Irish Famine over the last few months the class were lucky to attend the park today for a tour of what life was like for some of the lucky Irish people who could make the journey to America to escape the Famine.

The pupils were fascinated to learn about Thomas Mellon who emigrated from Omagh to Pittsburgh in the 19th Century. Tour guides showed the pupils the traditional homes lived in by many people back then and described conditions on the ships who made the journey. The class also got to see the different types of American homes Irish people moved to. In a bonus to this trip the P7's became one of the first schools to visit the new exhibition of 'Under The Hawthorn Tree' which they have been reading. The interactive exhibit in the visitor centre gave them some inspiration for projects still to come in the remaining months!
