Linguistic Phonics Training

Anne McKinless, SELB adviser for Linguistic Phonics, visited St John’s on Wednesday to deliver additional training to staff. Anne spent time working with all classes from P1 to P7. At St John’s we have adopted the Linguistic Phonics approach to teaching reading, spellings and sounds. It has already proven to be very successful in raising standards across the whole school in Literacy. Through extensive research and testing we found that pupils were not reaching their potential in some areas of Literacy. We decided to pursue the Linguistic approach to sounds. Having closely monitored the attainments of children since the programme was introduced; we have found our pupils have made excellent progress. We have introduced a new reading scheme at foundation stage to supplement the Linguistic Phonics approach and this also is proving to be a very successful scheme.
